Jorge Cainas
Materials from exploded stars, dinosaur bone, Woolly Mammoth fur, minerals, newspapers from around the world, vintage and antique newspaper or magazine clippings can all be found in my mixed media artwork. I combine unusual and rare materials with common ones like matches, dried flowers, yarn, and paper clips. Combining the rare, historical, and profound with the intimate, ordinary and mundane is a conscious effort to capture the spectrum of the human experience through material. Many of the themes repeated in my artwork are related to science, nature, and the human experience. I try to express these ideas through my artistic practices, typically taking the form of three-dimensional or two-dimensional mixed media. I use many techniques to create my 3D and 2D work such as wire wrapping, basket weaving, metalworking, ceramics, hand-building clay, beadwork, glasswork, painting, drawing and collage. The major things that inspire me are the natural world and the many aspects of being human. My goal is to inspire gratitude for the natural world, intellectual curiosity, and an appreciation for our shared humanity.
