On what is expected to be a busy holiday weekend, local organizations are getting in the Juneteenth spirit with celebrations all weekend around the Puget Sound. The holiday coincides with the much-anticipated FIFA World Cup match between the United States and Australia at Lumen Field and Solstice celebrations throughout the city, and in particular Fremont. 

In the case of Arte Noir in Seattle's Central District, the arts non-profit is combining the Juneteenth celebration with the World Cup spirit. The Central District art gallery is hosting a watch party on Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The match kicks off at noon. The Juneteenth festivities continue on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. with a celebration and pop-up market at Midtown Square, in collaboration with the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle and Seattle’s EcoDistrict. 

Arte Noir also collaborated with the local FIFA organizing committee on an art design contest. The works of Damon Brown and Samray Estifanos commemorating Juneteenth will be featured during Friday’s match between the US and Australia. 

Also, look for the new exhibit Power to the People at the Seattle Black Panther Interpretive Center, The Metropole Building in Pioneer Square. The exhibit is now open Thursdays-Sundays.

This weekend is also the summer solstice. Fremont, the center of the universe, is also the center of solstice celebrations in the area. The solstice parade kicks off the weekend’s celebration and Fremont Fair. Look for local artist Kelly Lyles’ art car exhibit. Lyles curates elaborately decorated cars from around the country for a one-of-a-kind art show.
